Cornwall’s Council Launches An Inquiry After Crowd Surge At Boardmasters Festival Leaves 7 Injured

CORNWALL, UK (CelebrityAccess) — A crowd surge at Superstruct’s Boardmasters Festival in Cornwall left 7 people with injuries on Friday at the surfing and live music event.

According to the BBC, the incident occurred at the festival’s The Point stage during a performance by DJ Sammy Virji, which was ultimately canceled.

Witnesses reported being crushed against crowd barriers and local law enforcement officials stated that they were notified of a “crowd collapse” at the festival which “left a small number of attendees injured.”

Law enforcement officials said that despite initial reports, no one was killed in the incident and the injuries appeared to have been minor.

In a statement released on Saturday, Boardmasters organizers said seven people were transported to area hospitals for evaluation and have all since been discharged.

One of those victims, a 17-year-old girl named Elena, told the BBC that she suffered soft tissue damage to her foot during the incident and will be on crutches for several weeks.

She said she waited an hour for assistance after the crowd surge and was provided with bottled water and told to return to her tent by festival staff.

“They gave me a bottle of water but that was it,” she told the BBC. “They wouldn’t give me any paracetamol, ice packs – they ran out of everything.”

According to event organizers, the festival’s Point Stage was re-opened after a full review of the safety management process.

Following the incident, Cornwall’s local government announced plans to open an inquiry into the incident. A spokesperson for the local authority told the BBC that the Council’s public protection service was investigating but was unable to comment further while the investigation is ongoing, the BBC reported.
