Oscar-winning actor Gary Oldman played Sirius Black in the Harry Potter movie series. Warner Bros. is producing an ambitious-sounding TV series, and many are wondering who–if anyone–from the original cast could come back. Oldman said in an interview that he loves the character but believes the producers will look to reboot the series with new actors.
“No one has approached me about that. Being Sirius Black again? I love Sirius. He wasn’t in [the films] enough. He turned up, and then he went through the veil,” he said about his character’s death in Order of the Phoenix. “I would bet my money that they will get a whole new cast of people in. Maybe in a few years I could do Dumbledore.”
Oldman’s assumption is correct for at least some of the characters, as Warner Bros. recently launched an open casting call for the kids who will play Harry, Ron, and Hermione. Many are assuming the rest of the roles will be played by different actors as well. In the case of Dumbledore, that has to happen, as both of the actors who portrayed him in the films, Richard Harris and Michael Gambon, have passed away.
Oldman previously called his performance in the movies “mediocre,” saying he wished he had read the books to better understand his character’s arc.
The Harry Potter TV series is being made for HBO and Max, and Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav has said he believes it could help his company turn things around. WBD is also producing more Lord of the Rings films as part of the company’s effort to focus on major franchises to make money.
The Harry Potter series was created by author J.K. Rowling. Her views and comments about the trans community continue to hang over the franchise. The author continues to share her opinions despite alienating herself from some fans of the franchise.
In other Harry Potter news, a remastered edition of The Lego Harry Potter Collection is coming this October.
