Aside from a basic front door, one of the best ways to protect your base or stop mobs from going anywhere is with a fence. The fence in Minecraft is quite powerful, as you can’t hop over it while standing on the ground, unlike many other blocks. To see how to craft a fence and the best way to use it, read the guide below.
Making a Fence in Minecraft
A fence is an extremely simple item to make once you know the recipe, as it only requires two basic resources to craft. You can see the crafting recipe for a basic fence below:
- At a crafting table, place two Sticks in the middle and bottom middle boxes
- Then, place four of the same wood Planks in the four boxes that border the Sticks
There aren’t any other items that are more easily acquired than Sticks and Planks. You can gather Planks by chopping down logs and placing them in a single box at a crafting table. Then, you’re able to use those Planks to make Sticks by placing two of them on top of one another at a crafting table. You now have all the resources required for a fence.
However, it’s important to remember that you need Planks of the same wood type for the fence recipe to work. If you try to use three Oak Planks and one Spruce Plank in the recipe, nothing will happen. This is because all fences are specified with the wood type they’re made from. The wood type alters the colors of each fence, but other than that there are no major differences.
When you have your fences ready to go, simply place one down on a block and then start connecting more off of that one. The fences will connect automatically as long as they’re placed on a bordering block. While you’re constructing your fence, you might want to leave room on one block for a fence gate. This is a separate item that can be crafted using four Sticks and two of the same wood Planks. The recipe is the same as a fence, but the positions of the Sticks and Planks are reversed. A fence gate allows you to go through the fence the same way a door allows you to go through a wall in your base.
