Secret Wars

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has gone through one heck of an upheaval in the last many months, partly stemming from the Jonathan Majors ouster as Kang. But in all the hullabaloo around where the MCU was going, we’d be remiss if we didn’t confirm a previous Giant Freakin Robot Exclusive where we scooped that the Russo Brothers were set to direct Avengers: Secret Wars.

It makes sense that the excitement surrounding Avengers: Secret Wars is pretty palpable, especially since Joe and Anthony Russo are returning to the fold. When we last saw them in the MCU, they were handling Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, which took in over $6 billion. Oh, and fans absolutely loved them.

This was after the pair handled Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War, two other fan-favorites in the franchise. To say they’ve put out the best the Marvel franchise has to offer is something of an understatement. Avengers: Secret Wars has the chance to be right up there with them.

The announcement about the Russo Brothers helming Avengers: Secret Wars came during the Marvel panel at Comic-Con, where Kevin Feige dropped the news. It was also announced that they would direct the Avengers: Doomsday, which will proceed Secret Wars in the timeline.

The even bigger news, along with the Avengers: Secret Wars piece, was that Robert Downey Jr. would get back into the Marvel mix, though not as Tony Stark/ Iron Man. No, no, no. He’s playing Doctor Doom. This phase’s (now) big bad with Jonathan Majors’ Kang out of the picture.

The promise of Secret Wars, at least if the comic book source material can be believed, is that we’ll see the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe come together for the story. There were two different comic book versions of this title, one in 1984 and another in 2015.

Avengers: Secret Wars is more likely to follow the latter timeline and arc with realities colliding as the Multiverse comes crashing on itself. This aligns with how Marvel’s been taking things in stories like Loki and Doctor Strange as well as the recent Deadpool & Wolverine.

Doctor Doom is at the center of that storyline, which makes his inclusion in the lead-up all the more sense.

In all, this is an exciting time for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which seems to have been searching for a path in recent movies. But with the Fantastic Four set to make their debut in The Fantastic Four: First Steps in (2025) and the Avengers movies bringing it all together, they have a chance to end things well.

The Russo Brothers are set to bring Avengers: Secret Wars to the big screen in May 2027.
